Guest lecture: Humor in Advertising: What Makes it Work?

We see humor in advertising all the time, but have you ever wondered how it works or what makes some successful but not others?

On Friday, April 16, 2021, starting at 2 PM, as part of a lecture within the study course Marketing Communication, which covers various aspects of integrated marketing communication, including advertising, the guest will be Hye Jin Yoon, Professor of Advertising and Public Relations, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication - University of Georgia, USA. She will give a lecture entitled Humor in Advertising: What Makes it Work?

This presentation will give you the tools to help you easily decode humor in advertising and show you different elements that make it successful. You will be observing examples along the way, including humor used in brand advertising, on social media, health communication, and even environmental communication.

As always, students will have the opportunity to discuss with the guest during and immediately after the lecture and ask questions they are interested in about this interesting topic. The lecture is also open to the public. Take advantage of the opportunities offered!

Dr. Hye Jin Yoon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Georgia. Her research expertise is in humor advertising and humor psychology, with growing interest in sustainable marketing and advertising. Other research interests include health and environmental issues in advertising and their impact on consumers and society, digital and social media advertising, and network and sentiment analysis. Her work has been published in many respected journals, such as the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Business Research, International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Health Communication, Health Communication, and Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising, among others. Dr. Yoon has received many awards and fellowships for her work, such as Journal of Interactive Advertising Best Reviewer Award, 2019, Journal of Advertising Best Reviewer Award, 2018, Sam Taylor Fellowship Award, 2012, 2014-2018, ICA Communication and Technology Division, Top Three Faculty Paper, 2011, and the American Academy of Advertising Dissertation Award, 2010.
